International Women's Day!

Happy Tuesday Everyone!

International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. In some places like China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women's Day is a national holiday. (Seems to me like a wonderful reason to have a NATIONAL Holiday, think we could pull that one off here in the USA???)

2011 is the Global Centenary Year!

The first International Women's Day event was run in 1911.

For more info. on International Women's Day here is the LINK to their website.

At first I thought I could really think about celebrating the day but then I watched this video;

After watching this video and listening to Dame Judi Dench's dialog I have to admit that I am thoroughly depressed and wonder if we will ever reach true equality.

So what do you think?

Do you feel woman have true equality?

Leave a comment and let me know :)

I'm always up for a celebration of our incredible gender! Tis depressing when you think about it in terms of how far we still have to go. Have a great Tuesday! Cheers, Jenni

"today celebrate the past accomplishments, and tomorrow we will change the future"

There is also something going on with people standing on bridges all over the world, in the major areas, I bet that will look really cool.

In this world money seems to rule, so I am pessimistic about our achieving true equality without having more purse power.

Here's something uplifting. My sister-in-law has had a lot of leadership training through her job, and she says that experts predict that women will soon have more prominent positions in the workplace than men. Why? Women are better listeners and multi-taskers. Which isn't to say that all men are bad leaders, but the reason men came into power in the first place is because they used to use physical intimidation to get things done. Now the world is a lot different, and apparently women are more natural leaders for the status quo.

Globally womankind is far from being on an level playing field with the male populace. In middle east countries and Muslim religions women have no rights and no voice. Margaret, a friend of mine, was at one time living in Saudi and in order to get a driver's license she had to be listed as a man. Women were not allowed to drive so her license read; "Margaret son of" (and then her father's name).
A Muslim girl or woman who has been raped is often murdered by her family for having brought shame to the family and the only way she can prove she was raped is if she has 3 males who witnessed the rape and will testify that it happened as her voice means nothing in their system of justice (that is if one could call it justice). It's hard to believe but true.

Great post!!! Gotta love Judi Dench...horrible stats though when you hear and see it like that. Though I think standing up together is one way to make steps in the right direction. "Almost Precious" comment is awful, but true. How can a human, any human, male or female for that matter, have no voice...it's disgusting when you think about it for a moment.

We are luckier here as women, than in many countries and I'm thankful for that.

Great thinking post!!!

Hope you're having a great day.

Honestly, not really. Like Almost Precious said, globally we're so far away from gaining anywhere near equality. Even in the US, there are laws targeting women and we still make less than men. Where men get mugged and beat up, women get mugged, beat up and raped. It's more of a mentality thing. Until we are no longer considered objects, property or things in people's minds (and yes, people because women can have that mentality too) we will always have struggle.

I have been lucky in my life to be surrounded by good men that treat me as an equal - but I know that is not the norm, and feel ill that so many people in the world are treated poorly for silly reasons such as gender, race, or style.

I really appreciate the honesty from all of you. I think speaking out and being actively aware there is a problem is a brave thing to do. We are lucky in the Western world, to a certain degree, to have the freedoms we have but we are a long way off being perfect.

Here is hoping that the whole world can eventually rescind stupid antiquiated laws that keep women downtrodden.

Thank you all for sharing. :) T.

I don't know if making this a national holiday will help us become equal...but at the same time the stats in this video are depressing and unacceptable. I hope each and everyone of us can help change the model. We need lots of strong women like you T! :)
